Pain and disability are hallmarks of many chronic diseases and the activities in the Physiotherapy and Biomechanics Research Unit is focused on treatment and measurement of these. Our research is focused on chronic musculoskeletal conditions including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and shoulder pain. These conditions impose a substantial burden on the affected individual and on society.
We are currently investigating the interaction between cardinal signs and symptoms of musculoskeletal diseases (e.g. pain and weakness) and biomechanical and neuromuscular factors. Also we evaluate the effectiveness of physiotherapy and exercise, and other conservative treatments, such as pharmacological therapy, weight loss, and herbal food supplements on motor performance, pain and physical disability. Further, we use methods of clinical epidemiology in studies of the evidence base and effectiveness of physiotherapy to inform our clinical research.
We take an active part in clinical research training of students in a range of disciplines and encourage students to participate in our research. For information about possible attachment to the unit as a pre- or post graduate student (Bachelor, Master, or PhD) please contact the unit head.
