Karen Ellegaard is the day-to day leader of the US unit at the Parker Institute. She received her authorization as a PT in 1990 from the Copenhagen School of Physiotherapy. In 2006 she went on to achieve her Master’s degree from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. In 2009 she completed her Ph.d from the Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction (SMI) at Aalborg University in Denmark. The topic for both her Master’s and Ph.d theses was validation of US examination in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Following her Ph.d, Dr. Ellegard has been working with US research both in rheumatoid arthritis and other patient groups, such as shoulder impingement patients and patients with osteoarthritis. All projects focus on improving the use of US in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal diseases. Dr. Ellegaard has published nearly 20 articles in peer reviewed scientific journals and has presented her scientific findings in both posters and oral presentations in international rheumatologic meetings. She has also been teaching both rheumatologists and physiotherapists in the use of US for patients with musculoskeletal diseases. Dr. Ellegaard works part time with US examination of patients for both scientific projects and diagnostic and treatment purposes and part time on her scientific projects.
